Moving rooms or halls
Sometimes your room or hall might not be quite right for you. If this happens, you can request to move to another room or hall during your time in University accommodation.
Requesting a room transfer
If you would like to move rooms or halls, you will need to complete a room transfer request form.
If you move into your room and it is not suitable, you can apply for a room transfer once all students have arrived (usually from October). This transfer can either be to a different room in your existing hall or within a different hall.
Room transfers operate throughout the academic year, so if your circumstances change, you can still request a move via our room transfer form:
Before you apply
Before submitting a room transfer request, you should ensure that your preferences are appropriate.
- Select accommodation that matches your level of study (for example, undergraduate or postgraduate halls)
- Check that the room type, contract length, and rent meet your requirements
Availability and timescales
Room transfers depend on the availability of suitable rooms.
- All requests are considered on a case-by-case basis
- There is no guarantee that a suitable option will become available, and you may need to wait until a vacancy arises
- The more options you include in your request, the more likely a suitable room will become available sooner. If you only select one specific hall, block, or room type, it may take longer for a suitable option to become available.
- During this time, you must remain in your current accommodation
- If you require a room transfer due to a medical or well-being issue, you should email the Accommodation Office outlining your circumstances and why your request may need to be prioritised. You will be asked to provide appropriate supporting evidence to help us assess your request.
Once you have submitted your request, it will be reviewed by the Accommodation Team. If a suitable room becomes available, you will be contacted with further details.
Support while you wait
If you are experiencing difficulties in your accommodation, support is available.
ResLife can help with issues related to flatmates and settling in. Often issues in halls can be resolved through ResLife and mean you don't need to transfer rooms.
If you're struggling with your health and wellbeing, there are services available across the University.
If your transfer is approved
If you are offered a transfer:
- You will be given details of your new room and move date
- You must vacate your current room by the agreed deadline
- Your accommodation charge will be updated from the date of your move
FAQs
If you move to a different room, your accommodation charge will be updated to reflect the new room from the date of transfer.
You can find the fees for each hall and room type on the halls page or finance page
You should only request accommodation that is suitable for you, for example:
- Undergraduate students should select undergraduate halls
- Postgraduate students should select postgraduate accommodation
You should also ensure you are happy with any changes to your licence agreement dates and rent.
Requests for unsuitable accommodation cannot be progressed.
If you wish to swap with another student, you must first ensure you are eligible to swap. To be eligible, you must be:
- Active students at The University of Manchester
- Of the same gender
- The same level of study e.g. you must both be undergraduates
- Happy with any changes in contract length or rent
If you meet the above criteria, you can request to swap rooms.
Both you and the student you wish to swap with must contact the Accommodation Office directly at accommodation@manchester.ac.uk. In your email, you will need to include; your UID, gender, level of study and the name of the person you would like to swap with. We can begin processing the request only once both students have contacted us.Please note that meeting the criteria does not guarantee that a swap will be approved, as other factors may affect the decision.
You must not arrange an informal swap or move rooms without approval. Doing so will result in disciplinary action.
There is no fixed timescale for room transfers. Transfers depend on when a suitable room becomes available.
The more options you include in your request, the more likely it is that a suitable room will become available sooner. For example, being open to a range of halls or room types may reduce your waiting time.
If you only select one specific hall, block, or room type, it may take longer for a suitable option to become available.
