Did you know your possessions are insured while you’re staying with us through our partner, Howden? Find out what is and isn’t covered, by registering with the Howden for Students app.

What's more, you can access a 24/7 wellbeing helpline, a dedicated blog section for everything you need to know about student life, receive discounts on other student-friendly insurance, and check out the career advice section.

TV licence

If you want to watch live television or use an online catch-up service, you'll need to be covered by a TV licence. Communal TVs in halls, such as Unsworth Park, are covered but personal devices aren’t.

Many streaming services have on-demand content but increasingly many also show live TV or events as they happen. For any live TV or live events you'll need a TV Licence.  Streaming services include YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Now, Sky Go, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and more. Live TV or events can include:

  • Champions League matches or live channels on Amazon Prime Video
  • WWE or NFL events on Netflix
  • News or sports channels on YouTube
  • Last year's Christmas specials on BBC iPlayer

What about on-demand programmes?

You need a TV Licence to watch any live and on-demand programmes on BBC iPlayer*. You don't need a TV Licence to watch on-demand programmes on other services such as Netflix, ITVx or YouTube.

Watching YouTube

You don’t need a TV Licence to watch videos or clips on demand on YouTube.

But you DO need a TV Licence if you watch TV live on YouTube. An example of this would be watching Sky News live. But it isn't just live news or sport which needs a licence – it's any programme which is part of a TV channel, shown or transmitted for everyone to watch at the same time.

For more information visit the TV licencing website.
